Falls Prevention Program

Falls Prevention Program

The occurrence of falls for the elderly, both in the home and community, is a major risk that can result in significant injury and hospitalization.

One in three persons aged over 65 years experiences a fall more than once every year and almost 50% of these falls occur at home (Dolinis et al 1997). Falls are the major cause of injury, accounting for 56% of all hospital admissions for people aged over 75 years.

Health care costs associated with falls among older Australians has been estimated at more than $406 million annually (Matthers and Penm 1999), but is expected to be significantly more than that now.

The group with the highest risk of falls, the highest incidence of falls and who incur the most serious hospitalizations is the 75 years and over age group who live home alone.

Many falls and falls injuries among this group are preventable and early identification of specific risk factors is likely to improve outcomes.

Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists can play an integral role in addressing these issues in those clients at risk.

Rehability's team of professional health practitioners can provide home safety assessments and hazard management programs, a falls prevention exercise program and assist with the management of reduced vision to decrease the incidence of falls in those at risk.
